BUY THIS BOOK

I can't believe how good this book is. I no longer feel self conscious about my outrageously ethnic DJ (and real) name and I have decided that djing in the 00's is not so bad after all considering all these old dudes were making 50 bucks a night! Seriously though this is detailed documentation of the emerging disco scene in New York like none other you've ever read. Vince Aletti was clearly the only critic who got this music and knew it was not a fad. Reading the first half of the book, I had an urge to pull out a lot of pre-76 (and pre 12 inch) disco classics and ended up making a mix at 1am. I basically "slip-cued" all these songs together since I had the volume very low, so as to not wake up my wife! A little sloppy but probably better for it. Enjoy!

If you want to get deep into pre-12" "disco", you need to check Nelson "Paradise" Roman, who, among other things, has one of the most in-depth and pristine collections, has an encyclopedic knowledge of club music, both black, european and latin, produced "Sweat" by Jay Williams, and was a bonafide old-school graph writer. He has stories about NYC for days, about places like Better Days. For the last several years he has been doing edits of disco records that only existed on 45- amazing stuff.
And fyi- I wish I had a last name as ill as "Escobar"! Sounds like you made it up anyway.

So ill. Thanks a lot, I think the mixing style works really well for these kind of tracks. I've recently come across a few other songs from this era that are on a similar tip: Bohannon's Stop & Go album has a couple good disco sounding jams including the title track and 'Run it on Down Mr. DJ'; Isaac Hayes' LP Chocolate Chip, title track and "I Can't Turn Around", Queen Yamaha's "Ain't It Time" 7", Funkadelic's "Red Hot Momma" 7".
